Project description

How the multimedia design project will be graded

Criteria 0-5 point range 6-15 point range 16-20 point range
Is the multimedia piece focused and complete?
With only 2-5 minutes, you're not creating a full-length movie, a sitcom, or a documentary. Adapt your story line accordingly. You'll need to focus on illustrating a complete story arc. Make sure that your story can be completely conveyed in the time you have to work with. Your multimedia piece must stand on its own, i.e., everything that is needed for your message must be contained within your piece; for example, your piece must not be dependent on a personal introduction or a follow-up explanation.
The project is incomplete and contains many unfinished elements. Some project requirements may be missing or only represented through placeholders. The project is complete, but shows signs of being rushed or done at the last minute. Some required elements may be missing. Among the components that are present, the quality is not consistently high. The project is complete in all aspects, including citing sources for any appropriated images, music, and video.
Does the multimedia piece achieve the goal of delivering a profound story, informing, or persuading?
The objective of the assignment is to be creative in the melding of all the multimedia components available in this course. You can challenge the viewer but provide a rewarding story at the same time. Think about your personal insight that adds individuality to your story and what you want the viewer to take away or remember as a result of your story. Is the piece clear, and accurate in the information it delivers, with evidence to support it claims or details to embellish the story line? Does the piece demonstrate your knowledge of the subject, your personal perspective, and offer something special to make it worth watching?

Does the multimedia piece succeed with multi-modal delivery?
Do your images extend the understanding and memorability of your message? Does the language of your narration complement your selected images? Both the visual and verbal channels should be engaged in a manner that strengthens what you are communicating, beyond what could be achieved by using just one of the channels by itself or by duplicating the exact same information in both visual and auditory channels.
Multimedia elements accompany content but there is little sign of mutual reinforcement. There is no attention to visual design criteria such as balance and proportion. There is some tendency toward random use of graphical elements that do not reinforce the message. Multimedia elements and content are combined to adequately deliver a high impact message with the elements and words reinforcing each other.

How well does the use of multimedia elements support and extend the message?
Has the project developer optimized all of the media ingredients successfully? Has the producer taken advantage of the post-production capabilities afforded by Final Cut Pro and supporting programs?

  • the use of the visual frame demonstrates strong composition
  • your own audio narration (i.e., using your own voice)
  • images to support the message and improve its memorability
  • title screen (can be placed anywhere in the piece)
  • closing credits (at a minimum, include your name)
  • additional advanced techniques, if appropriate, such as compositing, translating a 3D experience into 2D
Screens are either barren and stark or cluttered and confusing. An exaggerated emphasis on graphics and special effects has weakened the message and interfered with the communication of content and ideas. There are production issues that have not been resolved in post-production. Scenes are present that should have been shot again. Audio issues are present that should have been resolved. Editing mistakes are evident. The project makes excellent use of images, typography, color, lighting, audio and video recording, editing, and post-production capabilities.
Does the project hold the audience's attention in an aesthetically pleasing manner?
Have all of the elements been combined seamlessly, so that the viewer is not distracted by them but instead has a holistic experience of the final work? Is the project truly multimedia, incorporating more media elements that could be delivered in other presentation formats (such as a narrated slide show)? Are color, type, framing, image clarity, and consistent audio levels present for an aesthetically pleasing viewing and listening experience? Do all of the creative elements combine synergistically to deliver something that is outstanding, memorable, inspiring, or compelling?
The project is aesthetically pleasing and holds the audience's attention. The project demonstrates creativity, originality, and inventiveness.
