Exercise 6:
Search stories

Objective:
Get acquainted with digital storytelling without being concerned with file formats, equipment availability, or editing techniques --we'll get to all of that soon enough. In this exercise, we want to focus on the essence of telling a story over time (as compared to telling a story in a single, still photograph). Your search story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Something should happen to the main character who is pre-determined in this case to be the person typing the search queries. Your story should match the narrative (typed search) with the visuals (you'll get to choose between search results, maps, images, blogs, etc.). In the process of creating your story, you will have an opportunity to select from pre-set music samples --you must choose, but choose wisely, so the the music complements the rest of the story and accentuates rather than competes with the tone or mood.

In a nutshell, you'll be creating a digital story without breaking a sweat working with the technology. Along the way, you'll also activate your own personal YouTube channel if you haven't already.

The assignment:
Use the "make your own story" option at YouTube search stories to create a story with seven segments, relevant visuals, and appropriate music and post it to your account at YouTube.
Points:
Your story is compelling, has an interesting story arch, and shows attention to the detail required of good storytelling. Your story is worth leaving on YouTube and sharing with family and friends. 2
You finished a story, but it gives the impression that you did only one "take", or you didn't bother to look at the suggested search tips, or you didn't check all the music samples to find a good match, or perhaps you didn't take the time deliver a complete story. 1
You attempted the activities, but did not successfully complete any of the criteria above. 0
